2. A natural Flemish accent works better than rigid Standard Dutch
Flemish learners quickly lose interest in forced, overly correct articulation. It feels distant. A naturally delivered Flemish voice works much better for engaging employees in Belgian workplaces. Our voices, like Birgit's, show this. She did off-screen broadcasting for Belgian TV channels for years. She demonstrates how important a familiar, warm sound is to make complex subjects manageable.
3. The secret lies in pauses, not reading speed
It's a common mistake to think a training module needs to sound fast and smooth. People believe this keeps attention. In reality, people process spoken text more slowly. This happens when images or diagrams are also on screen.
- Give technical terms room to breathe. Consciously add a half-second of silence.
- Vary sentence lengths. This gives the recording a natural rhythm.
- Let the voice rest after a key conclusion. Then move on to the next slide.
Director's tip from the studio: do not just have the voice actor read the text. Ask them to visualise the background visuals as well. If a voice understands which diagram the learner is looking at, pauses and emphases naturally fall into place.
4. A neutral tone is not a boring tone
Speaking calmly does not mean the voice should sound monotone. The difference lies in empathy. A good voice actor speaks as if they are explaining something one-on-one to a colleague by the coffee machine. You see the same approach for international projects. Take voices like Lonneke from the Netherlands or Yvonne from Germany. They find exactly the right human balance within their own language variants.
5. E-learning rates differ from commercial buy-outs
For commercials, you pay a fixed basic rate for the recording. Plus, there is a buy-out for the specific channel and duration on radio or TV. This works differently for training material. This is non-commercial work. It includes internal training or educational modules. Voice actors charge a rate per word or per project. This makes it very clear upfront. You can easily prepare a precise quote for the entire project.
