How is the Rate for a Professional Voice-Over Calculated?
When booking a voice actor, the pricing structure depends heavily on the type of project. We make a clear distinction between non-commercial work and commercial campaigns.
For non-commercial assignments, such as e-learning, an internal corporate film, or an audiobook, we usually charge based on word count or a fixed project rate. You then pay for the spoken time and the studio finishing.
For commercial productions, such as commercials for radio, television, or online media, the industry works with two components:
- The basic fee for the studio recording.
- The buy-out for the usage and broadcasting rights of the recording.
Why Does a Buy-Out Differ Per Commercial Assignment?
You can compare a buy-out to renting a digital advertising poster alongside a busy motorway. You pay not only for printing the poster but, more importantly, for the location and duration of its display.
The voice actor's fee therefore increases with the campaign's reach. A regional spot in a specific area requires a different investment than a nationwide campaign on all national channels. The duration also plays a role: a one-month broadcast requires a lower licence than a spot running for a whole year.
What Should You Look For When Selecting a Voice Actor?
The choice of voice depends on the feeling you wish to convey. A Belgian client often needs an authentic Flemish accent that inspires trust.
