My tip for this step: when listening to demos, always pay attention to the pauses between sentences. A good voice actor dares to leave pauses without breaking the tension.
Directing: script preparation prevents expensive corrections
A significant part of the final e-learning voice-over price is not determined behind the microphone, but at your own desk, well before the recording starts. German sentences are grammatically structured differently from Dutch. While we put the verb at the beginning, German often places participles and separable verbs at the very end of a sentence.
If you have a screen recording where a button lights up on the word "save", the German-speaking voice actor must pronounce that word at that exact moment. If the verb appears three seconds later due to German sentence structure, the learner gets confused. The finger hovers over the mouse, attention shifts from the learning material to the technology, and the learning effect diminishes.
Here is a director's tip from our daily practice: a voice actor who needs to record a translated e-learning synchronously needs breathing room in the text. Always write translated scripts ten to fifteen percent shorter than the original. Delete unnecessary adverbs such as "naturally," "simply," or "actually." This gives the voice actor the physical space to pronounce the sentences naturally without having to rush to keep up with the animation.
My tip for this step: read the translated script aloud yourself with a stopwatch while watching the screen recording. Where your tongue stumbles, the voice actor will also lose time.
The order process in three concrete steps
To go from a raw text to a ready-to-use, edited German-language learning course, we follow a clear and fixed sequence. This way, you will not encounter surprises or extra costs afterwards:
- Contact us and provide the script: You provide us with the final texts, including any timecodes, the video, and a pronunciation guide for brand names or technical terms.
- Choose a voice and review a test recording: Together, we select the right voice actor for your tone of voice, after which we arrange a short test recording to hear if the pitch and rhythm perfectly match your target audience.
- Book recording, direction, and delivery: After your approval, the voice actor goes into the studio. The audio files are professionally cleaned, post-processed, precisely timed, and delivered to you neatly per module or per slide.
If, during listening, a word needs to be emphasised differently, we resolve that quickly and carefully. As Willem mentioned in his review: "Had a nice voicemail message made, and when it turned out to be too long according to my provider, it was neatly adjusted. So the adjustment was well-handled and done quickly." We extend this same flexibility to all our spoken projects.
My tip for this step: always consolidate your feedback on the first recording into one clear document, provided with exact timecodes. That saves back-and-forth emails and keeps the process smooth.
