The challenge: from a wooden script to an engaging story
Consider the example of a local company that wanted to launch an instructional video. The marketing employee, with a clear voice, decided to record the voice-over themselves. On paper, it sounded good, but the final result in the edit felt stiff. The voice sounded monotonous, and the sentences didn't flow naturally with the visuals.
A professional voice is like a custom-made wooden table from a furniture maker. You don't see the joints or the glue, but you immediately notice when the table wobbles. With an inexperienced voice, you hear the 'glue': the loud breaths between sentences, the swallowing, and the forced emphasis on the wrong syllables. The challenge was to remove these technical hurdles and make the script flow as if the speaker was personally advising the listener.
The approach: the details that make a voice truly professional
To turn a written script into a natural dialogue, an experienced voice actor applies various micro-techniques. In our database of 94 professional voices, we see daily how this works in practice. Voices like Veronique, a popular French-speaking voice actress from Belgium, or Vera from the Netherlands, master these subtleties perfectly.
As a voice director, during a recording session, I pay attention to the smallest details that the listener unconsciously registers:
- The smile in the voice: Speaking with a slight smile changes the mouth's position and makes the sound more open and friendly.
- Breath control: Not just breathing when you run out of air, but breathing at a sentence's natural pauses.
- Micro-pauses: Sometimes a second of silence just before an important word says more than placing emphasis on the word itself.
My most important directing tip for those starting out: practise 'silent breathing'. Beginners often breathe in loudly through their mouths, which creates disruptive background noise in the studio. By breathing in controlled through your nose or with a relaxed jaw, the recording remains clear, and you maintain control over the entire sentence.
The result: how the right tone resonates with the listener
When the company finally opted for a professional approach, the entire dynamic of the video changed. The script was no longer read, but narrated with a natural, warm tone that perfectly matched the visuals.
