For non-commercial recordings, such as an internal corporate video, e-learning module, or audiobook, we typically charge a per-word rate or a fixed project fee. The voice actor records the script, edits the audio into a clean file, and delivers it.
For commercial projects, such as a radio spot or an online advertisement, the structure consists of two parts:
- The basic rate: the remuneration for studio time, the recording performance, and the delivery of the audio.
- The buy-out: the licence for usage. This price depends on the medium (online, radio, TV), the region (regional, national), and the period the spot will be broadcast.
Director's Tip: During recording, give a voice actor sufficient breathing room in the script. A 280-word script rushed to fit into exactly one minute loses its persuasiveness. By calmly placing the emphasis, the message sounds much more trustworthy.
The Approach: Making Smart Choices Based on Usage
In our practical example, the client opted for a targeted approach to keep costs manageable and transparent. The steps were as follows:
- Defining the purpose and distribution: the main film remained permanently on the website (non-commercial use), while the shortened version ran for three months as a sponsored video on social media (commercial buy-out).
- Selecting the right voice: from our roster of 94 professional voice actors, a warm, natural voice was chosen that perfectly matched the company's identity. For example, for the French-language version of the video, a voice like Julie's was used, an experienced French-speaking voice actor from Belgium with a natural sound.
- A clear, tailored quote: the rate was split into a fixed amount for the complete corporate video and a clear licence for the temporary online campaign.
The Result: Transparency and the Right Tone
By asking the right questions upfront, the client knew exactly where the budget was going. No unexpected invoices afterwards and no ambiguity about the use of the recordings. The audio was delivered ready-to-use, perfectly timed, and immediately usable for the editor.
When the structure of a rate is clear, you invest not only in a voice, but in the complete finalisation of your video project.
