Are you toying with the idea of using your voice for video, advertising or telephone work, but not sure where to start? Voices Studio’s voice-over workshop for beginners is designed for those taking that very first step. You don’t need any experience or your own studio: you’ll learn the basics whilst actually standing in front of the microphone.
Who is this workshop for?
This one-day workshop is intended for complete beginners who want to find out whether voice-over is right for them. You’ll work in a small group, so that everyone gets equal attention and personalised feedback. Whether you’re simply curious or have been toying with the idea of pursuing it professionally for some time, you’ll leave with an honest assessment of your voice and your potential.
What exactly will you learn?
You’ll learn the basics of recording voice-overs: from vocal warm-ups to understanding the text, intonation and speaking into the microphone. Specifically, you’ll work on:
- vocal warm-ups and breathing, so you sound relaxed;
- text analysis: reading a script and understanding where to place the emphasis;
- microphone technique and how to position yourself in the booth;
- different tones of voice, from clear and businesslike to warm and narrative.
You’ll receive practical tips on how to really bring texts to life, and gain an understanding of how to use your voice for a variety of styles.
What does the day involve?
It’s a full day at our studio in Molenbeek (Brussels), including a hot lunch. After a brief introduction, you’ll get straight down to work. The day is structured around practice and feedback:
- arrival and introductions in the morning;
- part 1: working with book introductions;
- a hot lunch to catch up;
- part 2: working with dialogues;
- feedback sessions and a closing Q&A.
As the group remains small, you’ll often find yourself in front of the microphone. Many participants can already hear the difference between their first and final takes within the course of that single day.
Who are the coaches?
You’ll be guided by Johfrah Lefebvre, a voice-over artist and coach with over ten years’ experience. You may recognise his voice from TV adverts and corporate videos. He often works in tandem with Bernadette Timmermans, a voice coach, author of Klink Klaar and a teacher of voice and pronunciation. Together, they provide targeted, honest feedback that you can put into practice straight away.
What will you take home with you?
You’ll go home with a professional recording of your work from that day. This is a perfect start for your portfolio, even if it isn’t yet a full commercial demo. Just as importantly, you’ll have a better idea of what does and doesn’t suit you, and which direction you might want to explore further.
What do participants say?
“Plenty of practice, with to-the-point feedback that took the end result to the next level every time.” (Yves)
“The moments when you could hear the difference between your first take and your last. And the demos you receive afterwards are really useful for starting a portfolio.” (Livia)
“Being able to do it yourself, discovering different styles and having plenty of choice. The ‘Voice-over for Beginners’ course delivers on its promise.” (Kiara)
