Director's tip: the invaluable worth of the breathing pause
In the studio, we often see it happen: a voice actor wants to get through the text as efficiently as possible, causing sentences to stick too close together. My most important tip as a director is this: give breathing space its due.
It is the silences and natural breaths between sentences that allow the listener to process the information. A voice that constantly rushes through without audible breathing sounds unnatural and unconsciously creates stress for the listener. By subtly leaving the breathing in the mix, the recording retains its human character, even if the video is still actively used a year from now.
The behind-the-scenes selection process
To find a voice that still feels right months later, we work with a carefully selected database of 93 professional voices. These are all experienced voice actors who master their craft. Selecting the right voice follows a few fixed steps in our studio:
- Voice analysis: we look at the video's target audience and determine whether there is a need for a young, dynamic voice or a mature, professional tone.
- Casting: we present targeted demos, such as that of our Dutch voice Petra, known as the voice of Google Netherlands, or Jakob, who perfectly suits an audience of young professionals.
- Briefing for the recording: we instruct the voice actor on the pace and the desired lifespan of the production, so that the tone is perfectly aligned for long-term use.
The rate structure clearly explained
A sustainable voice choice also means that the business side needs to be clear, so no surprises arise later if a video stays online longer than planned. The costs of a professional recording are made up of two clear parts.
Firstly, there is the fixed basic fee for the voice actor's performance in the studio and the recording itself. Additionally, for commercial projects, we work with a buy-out rate. This is the remuneration for the usage rights of the voice, which depends on the medium where the video is placed and the campaign's duration. For non-commercial projects, such as an internal e-learning or a corporate video, we apply rates per word or per project. This way, you know exactly where you stand upfront and no unexpected costs arise months later.
