A telephony voice needs to remain clear and understandable through a phone connection, which typically only transmits the mid-range of sound. What sounds great on a speaker might become unclear when heard over the phone.
That's why a clear, slightly more neutral voice works best for telephony, rather than a very deep or very light one. The pace can also be a little slower than elsewhere, as callers hear the message once, usually without the option to rewind, and often amidst background noise.
The scripts are usually short: greetings, menu options, hold messages, and out-of-hours messages. They are often updated individually, so all four should ideally come from the same voice actor and be recorded in the same session. You will instantly notice a new fragment mixed with older recordings.
Finally, a phone system usually requires a specific audio format. This is a delivery specification and does not affect the sound quality of the recording itself.
