A commercial voice-over is a recording that sells or promotes something. This includes radio commercials, television commercials, online advertisements, or in-store messages.
The distinction from non-commercial work is not artistic; it is legal and financial. An advertising recording reaches many people. It therefore has more value than the same text used for an internal meeting. This is why usage - covering medium, territory, and duration - is a separate agreement on top of the recording work.
The speaking style also differs. A commercial needs to deliver a message in fifteen or thirty seconds. It requires a memorable brand name and a pace suitable for editing. This calls for precise, second-by-second direction, not just a pleasant voice.
In practice, this means considering the length when writing and reading your script aloud. A text that appears to fit within thirty seconds on paper will almost always take longer to record.
