IVR stands for 'interactive voice response'. This is the spoken menu you hear when you call a company. 'Press 1 for...' is an example of an IVR.
This kind of menu consists of a series of short recordings: a greeting, the options, messages for waiting, and a closing message outside opening hours. Together, they form the first voice a customer hears from your organisation.
What makes a good menu is not just the voice, but also its structure. First, state what the caller can choose, then which key to press. For example, say 'for an order, press 1' instead of 'press 1 for an order'. Limit the number of choices and repeat them once.
When you record, all parts should come from the same voice and the same recording session. Placing last year's greeting next to a new menu list will be immediately noticeable. That sounds much messier than the words themselves can ever fix.
