Flemish and Dutch are the same language. However, a Flemish and a Dutch voice sound different right away. The difference lies in sound, word choice, and tempo. A Flemish listener hears this difference within one second.
The sound is the most noticeable difference. A Dutch speaker usually has a sharper 'g' and a different 'r' sound. Flemish speakers have a flatter intonation and sound a little slower. The sentence melody also differs: Dutch often rises at the end of a sentence.
Additionally, there's word choice. For example, 'Gsm' versus 'mobieltje', 'kleedje' versus 'jurkje', 'goesting' versus 'zin in'. A text that sounds natural in the Netherlands can sometimes sound a bit too fluent in Flanders. Conversely, a Flemish text can sometimes sound too formal in the Netherlands.
For a campaign, this is not a minor detail. A Flemish target audience hearing a Dutch voice knows the message was not made for them. So, if you advertise in Flanders, choose a Flemish voice. If you serve both markets, it is best to have the text recorded twice.
